AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF CATHEDRAL CITY
AMENDING VARIOUS SECTIONS OF TITLE 10 OF THE
CATHEDRAL CITY MUNICIPAL CODE RELATING TO DOG
LICENSING AND ANIMAL QUARANTINE.

The city council of the City of Cathedral City does ordain as follows:
SECTION 1. Sections 10.08.010, 10.08.020, 10.08.030, 10.08.040 and 10.08.110 of
the Cathedral City Municipal Code hereby are amended to read as follows:
10.08.010 Current license required. No person within the city owning,
possessing, controlling, harboring, or keeping any dog over four months of age shall
fail, refuse or neglect to procure a current dog license tag for each dog, from the
city manager or his authorized agent. No license issued pursuant to this title shall be
transferable.
10.08.020 Exemptions. A current dog license tag is not required for any dog
found within the city under any of the following conditions:
A. When the dog is owned by, or in the care of, any person who is a
nonresident or who is traveling through the city, or who is temporarily sojourning
therein, provided the dog is kept within the city for less than thirty days;
B. When the dog has a valid license from either the county of Riverside or
another city within the county; provided this exemption shall be available for a
maximum period not exceeding six months.
10.08.030 Term. The effective period of each dog license issued shall be not
more than two years nor longer than the dog's current rabies immunization period,
and shall not be issued for any period less than six months.
10.08.040 Fees. The license fee payable shall be the amount fixed from time
to time by resolution of the city council. There shall be a fifty percent penalty
chargeable in any case where a license is not renewed within thirty days after the
prior license expires, and in any case of initial licensing of a dog where the license is
not procured within thirty days from the date of an official written notice to an
owner to procure such a license. The said fifty percent penalty shall be computed
on the basis of the license fee due for a one-year period.
10.08.110 Tag--Replacement. If the dog license tag is lost or destroyed, the
owner shall immediately procure a duplicate license tag from the licensing
authority, for which a fee of one-half the annual fee, but not less than one dollar,
shall be charged.

SECTION 2. Section 10.16.010 of the Cathedral City Municipal Code hereby is
amended to read as follows:
10.16.010 Biting animals--Quarantine orders. Whenever it is shown that any
dog or other animal has bitten any person or animal, or exhibits evidence of rabies,
no owner or person having custody or possession thereof, upon order of the animal

control officer or of the county health officer (or any other person exercising the
duties of health officer for the city), shall fail, refuse, or neglect to quarantine the
animal and keep it tied up or confined for a period of ten days in the case of a dog or
cat, or fourteen days in the case of any other animal, nor shall any such owner or
person fail, refuse, or neglect to allow the animal control officer or the health
officer or their deputies to make an inspection or examination thereof at any time
during such period. No such dog or animal shall be removed or released during the
quarantine period without the written permission of the animal control officer or
the health officer or their deputies. Unless otherwise specified by the animal control
officer or the health officer, the animal shall be confined in a pound or shelter or a
veterinary hospital at the owner's expense.
SECTION 3. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect
thirty (30) days after passage.
SECTION 4. POSTING. The City Clerk shall within 15 days after the passage of
this ordinance, cause it to be posted in at least the 3 public places designated by
resolution of the City Council; shall certify to the adoption and posting of this ordinance;
and shall cause this ordinance and it's certification, together with proof of posting, to be
entered in the book of ordinances of this City.
The foregoing Ordinance was approved and adopted at a meeting of the City Council
held on February 1 , 1984, by the following vote:
Ayes: Councilmembers Case, Martin, Murphy, Smith and Mayor Krings
