A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF CATHEDRAL CITY
CALIFORNIA AFFIRMING THE CITY OF CATHEDRAL CITY'S
COMMITMENT TO SUPPORT ITS 2013 CLIMATE ACTION PLAN, THE
STATE OF CALIFORNIA UNDER 20 MOU AND EXECUTIVE ORDER 6-
30-15, AND THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT
WHEREAS, the City of Cathedral City developed a Citywide sustainability and
climate action plan in 2013; and
WHEREAS, The Governor of the State of California has signed a memorandum of
understanding in 2015 called "Under 2°"; and
WHEREAS, The Governor of the State of California has signed Executive Order
B-30-15; and
WHEREAS, The State of California has agreed to support the Paris Climate
Agreement along with over 300 cities and states in the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, the City of Cathedral City has been supporting a sustainable
environment program for over 10 years to reduce it's greenhouse gas emission (GHG);
and
WHEREAS, the City Council of Cathedral City recognizes the vast majority of
scientists in the world, reviewing empirical date, point to the increase in GHG as
contributing to the affect of climate change; and
WHEREAS, in December 2015, in Paris, world leaders signed the first global
commitment to fight climate change. This landmark agreement succeeded where past
attempts failed because it allowed each country to set its own emission reduction targets
and adopt its own strategies for reaching them. In addition, nations — inspired by the
actions of local and regional governments, along with businesses — came to recognize
that addressing climate change brings significant economic and public health benefits;
and
WHEREAS,the City of Cathedral City wishes to join forces with other cities, states,
mayors, governors, college and university leaders, businesses and investors to declare
that the City of Cathedral City will continue to support climate action to meet the Paris
Agreement; and
WHEREAS, in the United States, it is the local and state governments, along with
businesses, that are primarily responsible for the dramatic decrease in GHG emissions
in recent years, actions by each group will multiply and accelerate in the years ahead;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Cathedral City wishes to recommit to its climate action plan
and its desire to support the State of California goals and the Paris Climate Agreement.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CATHEDRAL CITY,
DOES HEREBY RESOLVE, DETERMINE AND ORDER AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That the City of Cathedral City will continue to support its 2013 Climate-
Action Plan: Leadership in Energy Efficiency; and
Section 2. That the City of Cathedral City will continue to support the State of California
MOU Under 2°, and Executive Order B-30-15; and
Section 3. That the City of Cathedral City will remain actively engaged with the
international community as part of the global effort to hold warming well
below 2° C and to accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy that
will benefit our security, prosperity, and health; and
Section 4. That the City of Cathedral City will support the Paris Climate Agreement.
Section 5. A copy of this resolution will be sent to the President of the United States,
the Governor of California and the elected representatives of Cathedral City
serving in the US Senate, House of Representatives, California State, .
Senate and California State Assembly.
PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the City Council
of the City of Cathedral City held on this 26th day of July, 2017, by the following vote:
Ayes: Council Members Aguilar and Kaplan; Mayor Pro Tem Peftis
and Mayor Henry
Noes: Council Member.-Carnevale
