HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - Reso 2023-40 - 11/29/2023 RESOLUTION NO. 2023-40 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CATHEDRAL CITY, CALIFORNIA, DESIGNATING 68680 F STREET, ALSO KNOWN AS THE AGNES PELTON HOME AND STUDIO, A HISTORIC SITE PURSUANT TO CHAPTER 8.62 OF THE CATHEDRAL CITY MUNICIPAL CODE WHEREAS, Chapter 8.62 of Title 8 of the Cathedral City Municipal Code ("CCMC") provides for the designation of areas and/or specific buildings of the City which reflect elements of its cultural, social, economic, political, architectural and archaeological history as Historic Sites by the City Council of the City of Cathedral City; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 8.62.120 of the CCMC, the Historic Preservation Committee held a duly noticed public hearing on June 20, 2023, continued to October 17, 2023, where the majority of the Committee adopted a motion to recommend to the City Council that the Council designate the following property as a Class 1 Historic Site: Agnes Pelton Home and Studio Street Address: 68680 F Street, Cathedral City, California, 92234 Legal Description: POR LOT 228 MB 013/024 CATHEDRAL CITY Assessor's Parcel No.: 687-234-008 WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Committee forwarded to the City Council said recommendation, along with the written findings in the Historic Preservation Committee minutes for City Council approval or disapproval of the Committee's recommendation; and WHEREAS, the City Council held a duly noticed public hearing on November 29, 2023 and gave all persons full opportunity to be heard to present their views with respect to the proposed Class 1 Historic Site designation. WHEREAS, the City Council finds that the Agnes Pelton Home and Studio meets the criteria for designation as a Class 1 Historic Site as defined in Chapter 8.62 of the CCMC and, in particular, adopts the findings set forth below. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CATHEDRAL CITY, DOES HEREBY RESOLVE, DETERMINE AND ORDER AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. INCORPORATION OF RECITALS The City Council hereby finds the recitals set forth above to be true and correct. SECTION 2. DESIGNATION OF HISTORIC SITE In accordance with the provisions of Chapter 8.62 of Title 8 of the Cathedral City Municipal Code, this Council does hereby designate the hereinafter described as the Agnes Pelton Home and Studio, located at 68680 F Street, Cathedral City, California, 92234, as a Historic Site which reflects elements of the City of Cathedral City's cultural, social, economic, political, architectural and archaeological history. SECTION 3. FINDINGS The designation of Agnes Pelton Home and Studio as a Historic Site is based on the following: A. The Agnes Pelton Home and Studio was the home of Agnes Lawrence Pelton (1881-1961), a modernist painter who purchased the rachero style home and studio in Cathedral City in 1937. For the next 28 years, this is where she would paint many of the highly imaginative, spiritual-themed abstract masterworks she is known for today, many of which are owned by museums through the United States. B. Agnes Pelton's work was included in a landmark show in 1986 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, "The Spiritual in Art: Abstract Painting 1890-1985, ' and in 1996 at the Palm Springs Museum. C. The Agnes Pelton Home and Studio associated with the life of Agnes Lawrence Pelton, a person who made meaningful contribution to national, state and local history. SECTION 4. EFFECTIVE DATE This Resolution shall take effect on upon adoption.
